Description

•

The characteristic polynomial of a matroid is a polynomial p⁡k in one variable.

•

It is an evaluation of the Tutte polynomial T⁡x,y of that matroid, namely, p⁡k=−1rank⁡M⁢T⁡1−k,0.

•

Consequently, it respects the operations of deletion and contraction in the same way as the Tutte polynomial.

•

When applied to a graphic matroid M⁡G associated to a graph G, the characteristic polynomial of M⁡G is related to the chromatic polynomial of G. Namely, the characteristic polynomial of M⁡G is kc (where c is the number of connected components of G) times the chromatic polynomial of G.
